DESIGN IN A TOWN PLANNING CONTEXT

2010-03-18 11:37:10

Design in a town planning context is a holistic approach to design which encompasses not only the design of a particular site in isolation but which takes account of local influences. Any proposed development must promote innovative design solutions which are sustainable and enhance the local character, promote quality, choice and variety and create a successful relationship between public and private space.

The design must also encourage the efficient use and protection of natural resources enhancing biodiversity and must be capable of adapting over the lifetime of the project for future innovation and progress. Good design will also allow for safe, attractive and useful public spaces which can be monitored through natural surveillance. Ease of access for all and the promotion of sustainable means of travel are at the core of the design process and should be addressed from day one.

The expectations placed upon applicants by government and local authorities in terms of design are both complex and open to each person’s individual interpretation, as such it is imperative that consultation with the planning department is sought right at the outset of any project.
