PLANNING REGIONAL STRATEGIES

2010-06-16 11:36:29

Eric Pickles MP the new communities and local government secretary has moved quickly to ensure that the coalition government’s goal of localisation has an immediate impact. On the 27th May he wrote to the leaders of all the councils in England and Wales confirming that housing supply constraints laid out in the regional spatial strategies should no longer be a material consideration when deciding planning applications. This will have a profound effect upon the areas which have had the numbers of new dwellings held back, creating a situation where local councils  may well look to make up for lost time in terms of developing their own local area to its full potential. This letter will be followed up later in the year by legislation to formally end the role of regional spatial strategies.
